President's Message

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Northern Caribbean University (NCU), where learning never ends. The following article which speaks for itself is written by an alumna from Montego Bay, St James who entered NCU with 8 CXCs, completed the degree in Mass Communication and is presently directing the affairs in office of Freshman Advisement here at NCU.

"It has often been said that the future belongs to people who see possibilities before they become obvious, and to those who defy the odds with a determination to achieve at the highest possible level. Northern Caribbean University has equipped me with the lens necessary to take a glance into the future; to revolutionize a world where discontent breeds hatred and violence; to creatively and objectively create practical solutions with a tenacity that accepts no mediocrity and to acknowledge and appreciate God as the supreme Ruler of the Universe. Through industry and a strong work ethic coupled with liberal arts, Christ centred education, spiritual rejuvenation and a diverse social environment, I have been transformed and moulded by the ever present reality that true education should not only encapsulate the rigours of academic excellence, but should also provide the framework for personal growth and development.

Industry, service learning and work ethic are deliberately incorporated into the educational framework at NCU and many can attest to the calibre of professionals who continually contribute to nation building both locally and internationally. Character building, self development, self esteem, time and self management are skills developed through the work and study programme and have been the foundation for my professional career. I was not only able to build the theoretical framework for which I enrolled, but ultimately, I garnered professional experience, which fostered a sense of marketability in the workforce. The liberal arts approach of the academic programme expanded my horizons and enhanced my intellectual capacity, through exposure to the disciplines of humanities and fine arts, moral and physical development, science and environmental awareness. With my degree in one hand and three years’ professional experience in the other, I was adequately prepared to handle the challenges of the world of work.

NCU advocates holistic education which is Christ-centred. Had I not been exposed to Christ centred education and spiritual rejuvenation at NCU, the desire to give service not only to country but to God would not have been planted in my heart. I had been taken from a state of being empty and broken to being fulfilled. My renewed faith in God embedded in me a yearning to finish the course I had started. It was never always easy, there were days when crystal punch and air pie was the most sumptuous meal I could afford; days when I literally cried and felt like giving up; days when the pressures of class loads and exams were overwhelming, but I was always consoled by the weeks of prayer and church services held each semester. Throughout my tenure, the faith renewed and the prayers said were rewarded with scholarships that covered not only each semester’s expenses, but internship and graduation fees as well. Needless to say, the blessings were always glowing.

The warmth of our cultural diversity of this beloved institution is unlike any other and enhances not only interpersonal and intrapersonal skills, but engenders in each of us a greater understanding and appreciation of the little things that make us so different but yet so alike. I have formed lifelong personal and professional relationships which I will forever cherish. Being from a single parent home with a younger sibling, it was always refreshing to interact with other students from varied backgrounds and territories whether through socials, banquets or a game of pool in the student lounge.

I have walked these hallowed halls and I am still walking; this time not as a student, but as one who is ready to assist others in facing the rigours of academic excellence to help them experience the joy and fulfillment that comes from attaining Christ centred education. What has NCU not done for me? I dare to say, rather, what I have done for my University and what I will continue to do. I will continue to pay homage to those who have laid the foundation of excellence, humility and an undying passion for helping others; I will continue to raise the bar as I showcase to the world the knowledge I’ve gained, the skills I’ve honed and character traits I’ve developed during my sojourn; I will continue to recruit the best minds so that they too can experience the melodious pulsation of fulfilling and incomparable education. As an alumnus of Northern Caribbean University, I trust that yours will be a testimony of the glorious experiences you have had and the memories you have created. The NCU family will be only too happy to welcome you with arms wide open as they mould you into the gem that God wants you to be. March onward, ever upward, ever forward, Alma Mater NCU”. – April Lawrence
